| » An Honest To God Mile Long Update! |
Well....School just started up again this week and I am still reeling from my 3 week vacation. It was absolutely AMAZING. I was shocked to know how many people actually can and do use English on a regular basis in Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines! It makes me wonder why on earth I am wasting my time here in Japan when after years of hard work most Japanese people I know can not put even the simplest sentences together. I just keep telling myself that I can show them English is fun and important and more than a stupid book filled with grammatical errors! I love Japan to death and am excited to stay another year, but my 3 week vacation showed me that there are so many more places I want to go, so many more pictures to be taken and so many amazing stories and lessons to learn and tell. I will put together a Kodak photo account to let people see pictures from my trip sometime this week, but you can have a special rundown of my trip:) I left for Thailand with a backpacking backpack and a round trip ticket landing in Bangkok and departing from Manila. I know the hotel my friend Jessica and I would stay in our first night and out last night, everything else was plan as we go for the rest of the trip! It was amazing! I traveled to the north of Thailand which was full of traditional activities and tourists traps:) I spent a day riding elephants through the jungle, cooking traditional Thai food and learning the art of Thai massage (though the Thai massage thing is MUCH harder than it looks and I don't think I will ever want to give anyone a Thai massage!) The next stop on the trip was one of Thailand's ancient capitals, where we met up with 4 Italians traveling through Thailand. We spent 2 days with them and I learned a VERY little bit of Italian and they learned a very little bit of English. My friend Jessica who speaks Spanish acted as translator for most of the 48 hours we were all together! Then Jessica and I took a night bus to the Thailand's oldest capital: Ayuthaya. We made hotel reservations in advance and told the hotel we would arrive around 3:00 or 3:30 am. No one batted an eyelash or acted like this was anything out of the ordinary. So we were shocked when the bus driver woke us up and had us exit the bus to find us and our bags on the side of a major Thai highway with no hotels in site, and too scary looking non English speaking Thai men with motorcycles, Jessica and I thought we say a hotel sign about a 10-15 minute walk away and we set off arm in arm towards the light hoping that we could avoid getting on motorcycles with strangers. After we managed to cross the 6 lane highway, we began to pass by tons of sleeping dogs (Thailand has a VERY BIG stray dog problem) and we almost made it...when 3 large growling dogs came flying at us. I thought our lives were going to end right there. I could not believe I was stupid enough to cross a highway in the dark at 3 am and wander around Lord only knows were. Needless to say the 3 growling dogs woke up the others and Jessica and I ended up being completely surrounded by dogs. I have never been so scared in my life. All I could think of was "don't run, and don't let them know your scared..." the first was much easier than the second. Jessica and I ended up walking at a snails pace back to the highway and crossed back over much to the entertainment of the two motorcycle guys. Jessica then proceeded to flag down the next bus that came by and begged them to let us on the bus to Bangkok. Thankfully the bus driver let us on and only charged us double what he should of (2 dollars each!) and we made it to Bangkok at 5am. Then we spent a few days seeing the many sights Bangkok had to offer and I bought a pair of jeans! This might not sound exciting to you, but it was amazing for me because I can't buy ANYTHING in Japan! The best part about Thailand was the food. I am in love with Thai food. It is so delicious! That and Mango, coconut, pineapple and banana shakes. Fruit was SO cheap there! We then planned to fly to Kuala Lumpur to spend 2 days there before heading on to Singapore, however all the smog from the Sumatra fires were polluting the city and schools were cancelled and the government issued a travel warning discouraging people from spending more than an hour or two outside per day. Needless to say i only saw Kuala Lumpur through the windows of the airport and then we flew off to Singapore! Singapore was AMAZING! The mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Each culture had managed to sustain and thrive in Singapore while mixing enough to creat a unique Singaporean culture as well. I knew that English was the major language of Singapore, but I never expected to find things from home, like 7-11 Slurpee's, Reese's peanut butter cups, and Taco Bell! I have never been so excited to eat Taco Bell in my life, but I made a special trip out in Singapore to eat it! The best time in Singapore though was a musical Jessica and I attended. It was called the Dim Sum Dollies and it was a comedy about all things Singaporean. It also made fun of America, and Europe and Japan and I don't think I have laughed so hard in ages! Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Singapore to move on the the next great Adventure: The Philippines! In the end this was totally my favorite place. We visited the islands of Cebu and Bohol. Bohol had amazing white sand beaches, and clear blue water like pictures you see of Hawaii, and Cebu was a metropolitan city. Cebu is the second largest city in the Philippines but not a major tourist attraction. I wanted to go there because my pastor's wife grew up there and most of her family still lives there. I ended up getting to attend my first English church service since Easter and God totally blessed my trip there. I fell in love with the people and the city despite the poverty and run-down-ness of the city. I spent one day at a city beach where the locals go opposed to the touristy white sand beaches and it was amazing to see all the college aged kids and even adults swimming in shorts and t shirts and I soon learned that most people can't afford extras like swimsuits so they make do with what they have. The people there truly are amazing and I just wish I could put my feelings into words better! I am not doing it justice! I also got to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the Philippines for about $2! Which is all the more exciting when I say it is not going to be released in Japan until October and a cheap movie in japan is $10! After 3 weeks of vacation I was still not ready to return back to Japan. I think I could have lived out of my backpack for much longer. Which is a good thing considering someday I want to be a photo journalist traveling the world.

Your brain: 180% interpersonal, 80% visual, 120% verbal, and 20% mathematical! | Congratulations on being 400% smart! Actually, on my test, everyone is. The above score breaks down what kind of thinking you most enjoy doing. A score above 100% means you use that kind of thinking more than average, and a score below 100% means you use it less. It says nothing about how good you are at any one, just how interested you are in each, relatively. A substantial difference in scores between two people means, conclusively, that they are different kinds of thinkers.
Matching Summary: Each of us has different tastes. Still, I offer the following advice, which I think is obvious:
- Don't date someone if your interpersonal percentages differ by more than 80%.
- Don't be friends with someone if your verbal percentages differ by more than 100%.
- Don't have sex with someone if their math percentage is over 200%.
| |
My test tracked 4 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender: | You scored higher than 99% on interpersonal | | You scored higher than 63% on visual | | You scored higher than 89% on verbal | | You scored higher than 8% on mathematical |
